Thur,
04 April 2002
Hello
unto you.
With a
heavy heart, I announced the passings of Frank Tovey (Fad Gadget,
April 3), John Watermann (April 2), and Kevin Smith (of Say Yes to
Apes fame, February 15, but not realised until only recently).
4 April
2002 12:41
"It
is with great sadness that I have tell you that Frank Tovey has died.
The circumstances of his death are not yet known.
Frank
was the first artist I ever worked with on Mute, he made some very
special and influential records and was an exceptional live performer.
Frank played a big part in helping to lay the foundations of what
the label was to become in the ensuing years, I will miss him greatly.
My deepest
sympathy and condolences go out to his family.
Love,
Daniel
Miller"
Frank
Tovey's final post on his website went as follows:
02-04-2002
- SAMA and beyond
"Thank
you, my children of the night. Fad loves you. The Sama festival in
Gotenburg was great. We all had a good time, even though our dressing
room was burgled while we were on stage. Gunther had his jacket stolen,
Tommy lost his shades and Huw (our sound engineer) had his sweatshirt
nicked. Luckily, my collection of severed hands and my complete set
of hand drills were untouched. Also, an idiot from some Norwegian
band was upset that we left the stage covered in feathers and started
shouting at my girlfriend. You find these amateurs everywhere, unfortunately.
Apart from these minor hiccups, the show was a great success and the
band enjoyed
themselves tremendously.
It was
fun to meet some of Sissy Prozac and Statemachine back at the hotel.
Thanks for the beers Sunil. The short European tour was a gas and
we were pleased to see so many of our fans. I read all the messages
in the guest book. It's good to see what real people think. The music
biz is so full of bullshitters. The guestbook keeps me in touch, so
don't stop writing.
As you
may know, I'm currently writing new material. Be patient, my little
rodents, I know you crave blood but these things take time. You may
not see me again for a few months while I check my circuits, reprogram
my nerve system and regenerate some new flesh for you to devour. I
hope that there will be something for you to consume by the end of
the year but, in the meantime we will be playing some festivals in
the summer (dates to be announced when gigs are confirmed). And for
our Amercan fans (North & Latin) and Japanese fans, we hope to
visit you as soon as we find suitable agents in your territories.
Keep the letters coming in.
We will
see you soon.
Love,
Fad Gadget x"

"On
a sadder note, ex Say Yes To Apes / Hyphen-Smythe co-leader Kevin
Smith passed away in February. Smith was working on a film in China
and died after falling from a tower on the adjacent set. For those
who don't know Say Yes To Apes et al, they were one of south New Zealand's
(Invercargill) most bent DIY treasures and the starting point (?)
for one Duane Zarakov who's post I am herein re-ing.
Smith
left the world of DIY to become an actor and apparently was a bit
of a soapstar in NZ when he heard the call of Xena and took the roll
of Ares on the Warrior Princess's show. He had just been cast in an
American blockbuster with Bruce Willis (presumed to have been his
road to Russell Crowe-dom) when the accident took his life. Sad news."

"Biospheres:
Secrets Of The City".
"Exploring the hidden resonances and meanings of sound and image
that lie beneath our everyday surroundings. Taking the urban environment,
architecture, streets and the neighbourhoods that map the framework
of the city itself as the inspirational focal point, this work attempts
to re-assemble Brisbane and its surrounding spaces through its fringes.
Focusing on the sounds that have become invisible through familiarity,
"Biospheres: Secrets Of The City" also explores the neglected
architecture that dominates the urban environment."

"Legend

"Japan's psychedelic earth worshippers Acid Mothers Temple perform
live a score to the cult, X certificate Japanese Manga classic "Urotsukidji
- Legend of the Overfiend". The perfect accompaniment to Hideki
Takayama's 18 certificate 108 minute long animated classic. Acid Mothers
Temple unleash a lethal concoction of guitar solos, Jazz inspired
improvisation and Krautrock-like
noise to one of cinema's darkest fantasies. Graphic sex, demon-induced
gore and supernatural shenanigans make for a night of deliciously
uncensored hardcore horror. Take your warning. Adults only!"

and commands.
Watching
the clock, waking to an alarm, waiting for the phone to ring, waiting
for your call to beanswered, refusing to answer the phone. All of
these moments of suspension and discontinuityhave
a kind of Pavlovian force. Our response to these stimuli is not cerebral
- it is spinal. The
dial tones, ring, and busy singals of the world's telephone systems
comprise an odd collection
of simple musical gestures, immediately and inescapably recognizable
to some andconfusing
to others. For
example, the charming 10/8 pattern of the Italian dial tone can be
disconcerting
to someone used to the droning dial tones of the rest of the world.
The frequencies of the North American phone tones (350, 440, 480,
620 Hz) spell out a pleasingly exotic scale with a quarter tone sharp
fourth and a very flat seventh. The transition from a peaceful Javanese
pelog to an irritating busy signal occurs the instant two tones are
pulsed together at a steady 120 times a second. One final oddity -
in the movies, a dialtone appears whenever one person hangs up on
another. In life, dialtones are harder to come by."

"Unscene
Films - Avant-garde Landscape Films" - screening
"As part of Unscene, an exhibition of contemporary art about
landscape, Gasworks presents an afternoon of unique experimental films
about landscape from the 1960s & 1970s.
There are few exceptions to the accepted role of landscape in the
cinema as a backdrop to human agency. The short films presented in
this screening have no actors other than the land itself, no narrative
other than the natural environment and its relationship to the mechanical
eye of the camera. Their landscapes range from the remotest regions
to urban parklands. What all these filmmakers have in common, and
in common with many of the artists showing painting and photographs
in Unscene, is a systematic approach to understanding and framing
the landscape. Most of these films were made in the 1960s and 1970s
within a conceptual framework more applicable to contemporary art
practice than to earlier pastoral representations of the landscape
in painting and the cinema."

The Third
Annual Edible Book / High Low Tea - consumption
"The
International Edible Book Festival is a yearly event on April 1 throughout
the world from 2 - 4 PM (depending upon time zone). The edible books
are exhibited and, at 4PM, tea and / or coffee is served and the books
are consumed. For this High / Low tea, all works of art must be
edible
and have something to do with books! Each participating group or individual
is responsible for its / his / her own audience and website. From
2 - 4 PM, you sip High / Low Tea while viewing the edible exhibit.
At 4 PM, you photograph the work and eat it too.
Initiated by Judith A. Hoffberg over a Thanksgiving turkey with book
artists in 1999, the Edible Book High / Low Tea has become a sensation.
Look for the website at created by Beatrice Coron who was a catalyst
for making this a worldwide event!"
