Heart of the World", Canada, 2000, 35mm, 5 mins.
"Maddin
re-creates Soviet agit-prop, but this time the object is not the dictatorship
of the proletariat, but the utilisation of art and science in order
to capture the very heart of the world."
GEORGES
MELIES
"The
Melomaniac (Le Mélomane)", France, 1903, 16mm, 2 mins 18fps
"A
complex film to make, Méliès made multiple exposures of the same film
to achieve the effect of several heads perched on telegraph wires,
to comic and not a little horrific, effect."
"The
Four Hundred Tricks of the Devil (Les quatre cents Farces du Diable)",
France,
1906, 16mm 2 mins 18fps
"Méliès's
images are fantastically magical and their visual impact always memorable.
In this extract form a longer film a skeleton horse pulls a stagecoach
across the heavens. Féeries, or magical tales, were originally popular
in theatres and music halls."

"The
Zanzibar Films and the Dandies of May 1968" - screening
"Between
1968 and 1970, Sylvina Boissonnas, a young French heiress and patroness
of the arts, financed about fifteen films. "Zanzibar" signifies
an informal collaboration of about a dozen persons who took their
name from the Maoist country of Zanzibar. All of these films reflect
in one way or another the heady spirit and times of May 1968.
These
filmmakers were the darlings of Henri Langlois who often showed their
films at the Cinémathèque Française in late-night screenings.
Their
films represent the next generation one-upping the New Wave filmmakers.
At the end of the 1950s, the New Wave filmmakers, championing their
novelty and their youth, broke with the Cinéma de papa. But while
the New Wave filmmakers were all about thirty when they began making
films, the Zanzibar directors were in their twenties: in 1968 Philippe
Garrel was just twenty, and he, above all, was their figurehead. The
Zanzibar films make use of a minimal script, non-actors, improvisation,
and repetition. The Zanzibar participants all had very strong ties
with the world of fashion: they were the dandys of May 1968.
In
1970, Boissonnas traveled to New York with the painter Oliver Mosset
to present these films. Aside from this unique screening, these films
(with the exception of "Deux Fois") remain unknown in New
York. Several of the Zanzibar participants spent time in Warhol's
Factory in 1966-67, and these films represent the French equivalent
of the American underground. Absolutely not to be missed!"

WARHOL - screening
"Kiss"

"Soap
Opera" (Andy Warhol, USA, 1964) 46'
"Two
episodic films which illustrate Warhol's unique early cinematic
style. His silent movies were shot at sound speed and screened
one-third the pace, imparting an unreal, poetic / erotic slow
motion.
"Kiss"
is a series of high contrast, static shots of couples
kissing, each lasting the length of a roll of film. Warhol experiments
with the "Soap Opera" format by punctuating his own dramatic
sequences with actual television commercials."
