Hello
unto you.
Here
we have a rather encouraging update on the condition of Gary Todd,
from The Cortical Foundation...
Date:
Thu, 7 Mar 2002 12:53:28 EST
From:
Tinyrecord@aol.com
"Dear
friends and supporters...
Sorry
for not sending something to you sooner but as you can imagine it's
rather hectic...also the fact that Gary's condition changes day by
day...and it seems always for the better. I have some great news to
share. Monday the hospital called me to ask me if I was coming down...I
said I wasn't planning on it cause I knew some other friends of Gary's
(the venerable Marc, Valenta and Nava Weinstein) were going for a
visit. But they said that I SHOULD come down and were debating amongst
themselves if they should tell me or not and who was going to tell
me (I overheard them when I had to retrieve a call-waiting and when
I came back they didn't know I could still hear them), SOOOOO...I
said I'd be down there at 12:30...
When
I arrived...the guard at the front desk said that I should be prepared
to be amazed and that he was so happy to see what Gary had done...I
could feel something in the air...the hospital was abuzz. As I approached
the hallway, Gary was outside of his unit, already with Marc, Valenta
and Nava, in a special wheelchair and was operating it with his feet.
Surprisingly masterful at navigating space, he is now mobile. We spent
the next couple of hours moving all around the building...going up
and down the hallway, able to turn the wheelchair in the middle and
go the other way. We went outside down to Olympic Boulevard and around
the outside of the hospital just so he could feel the sun on his face
and see where he's been for months and to just see, smell and feel
the outside world. After 6 months of being on his back, this must
have felt incredibly liberating and such a clear sign that he's making
progress.
He
is still unable to directly communicate vocally and clearly let us
know what he wants, but this is a huge step in his progress. The hospital
staff was totally excited about him...he is clearly the favorite of
the unit...and now will have the run of the place.
As
the hours passed, he started to get tired. So, they put him back to
bed, but before he laid down, one of the nurses helped pull him up,
so he could sit on the edge of the bed. He was even able to hold himself
up without any support. I immediately massaged the whole of his back...I
simply can't imagine having been feeling the gravity of my own weight
on my back for 6 months. All this must feel so good for Gary.
Gary
seems very aware when he's awake. He even laughs silently and trying
to smile...although at times the laugh causes him discomfort. But,
he does understand when you talk to him. The laughing has been one
of the clear signs of awareness. He also can put cds into the cd player
and even headphone jacks in the small hole on the player, though he
can't put it in all the way.
He also can hold up cd packages, some books and magazines and thumb
through them. Michael and I have noticed he even looks like he's reading
the text, but we don't know for sure.
The
nurses tell me he helps them put his clothes on, and is eating little
bits of pureed foods, although still is having trouble with liquids.
But, he'll get there and he'll get his trachaeotomy removed. Last
night, I had a dream he was walking, wearing a tie and talking very
clearly. I hope this dream comes true.
He
does see a speech therapist who's evaluating his progress with regard
to eventually removing the trachaeotomy. It's all one day at a time.
Last
month saw Hermann Nitsch and his assistant Martha come all the way
from Vienna to visit Gary for 4 days. I know Gary was so happy to
see him, as we all were around here. To travel all that way for a
weekend was one of the kindest acts I've witnessed during this whole
process. In fact, I can't thank all of you enough who've helped take
some of the pressure off Michael and I. We've tried to orchestrate
it so someone is there everyday and with the help of Maria Montgomery
and Elaine Baker, who come down once a week. It really helps take
some of the pressure off. Michael and I cover the other days. If you
haven't visited...this is a great time to go, as he will most likely
be awake and present and aware of your visit. Just don't go if you're
at all feeling like a cold or flu. He is more active during the day.
If you do decide to visit if you could drop me or Michael Intriere
an email letting us know when...that way, perhaps we can take that
particular day off.
For
those of you who've sent stuff to Gary - CDs, cards, photos, emails
or letters - again, thank you. We read, play and show Gary your communiques
and I know he's very glad to hear from you. So, please keep sending
your mail. Some of your emails have fallen thru the cracks...I apologize,
but sometimes it's difficult to personalize a response cause so much
has happened.
There
is some bad news though. Gary's eyesight has been examined, and he
is now blind in his left eye and there's been some damage in his other
eye, but he can see well enough to operate the wheel chair with his
feet. He still needs to relax both of his arms and some of his fingers
on both hands. I have feeling that his tracheotomy makes him feel
very vulnerable and he wants to protect himself...or he simply could
be scared...and who wouldn't blame him for that? But we feel eventually
he will relax his arms and hands and become more dexterous. He's shown
a steady line of progress since December, and there's no reason why
it can't continue. Gary's brain is rewiring itself...and given the
extent to his injuries, what he is doing now is miraculous and a testament
to his willpower. Keep him in your prayers and in your heart.
Thanks
again for all your support - and sorry for the lack of news on my
part."
Best
regards,
Tom

"Argument".
(USA, 1978, 16mm, 75 min)
"Ruthless
in its provocation, a film that directly confronts the problematics
of avant-garde film exhibition. Rigorously structural, "Argument"
flicks relentlessly between magazine images, erotica, text and blank
leader to a soundtrack of three male voices.
Originally
screened as a deliberately inflammatory tract, with the two filmmakers
openly engaging with the post-screening onslaught, "Argument"
contentiously addresses issues that feel critically
relevant to the state of independent cinema here today. Come prepared
to speak OUR mind."

ANDY
WARHOL - screening
"My
Hustler" (Andy Warhol, USA, 1965) 67'
"Vinyl"
(Andy Warhol, USA, 1965) 66'
"Based
on an interpretation of Anthony Burgess' novel "A Clockwork
Orange", "Vinyl" has a claustrophobic, sado-masochistic
script by Ronald Tavel. Gerard Malanga undergoes reconditioning
for his transgressions as a juvenile delinquent. "My
Hustler" is a first attempt at a more commercial film, with some
concession towards conventional techniques. A sexual triangle
competes for the attention of Paul America, a young stud ordered
from the Dial-A-Hustler service."

DISINFORMATION
- lecture / demonstration
"Rorschach
Audio".
""Rorschach
Audio" is a lecture and demonstration that offers the primary
hypothesis that an informed understanding of the relevant aspects
of psychoacoustics offers rational explanations for virtually all
aspects of allegedly supernatural "Electronic Voice Phenomena".
Amongst other ideas "Rorschach Audio" also demonstrates
the influence that wartime intelligence work with sound had on E.H.
Gombrich's masterpiece "Art and Illusion" - arguably the
most important work of art theory ever published, and therefore the
secondary hypothesis that the study of acoustic illusions will prove
to be as important to understanding the emergent field of sound art
as the study
of optical illusions has historically been to the understanding of
visual art. A print version of "Rorschach Audio" is available
in the current issue of "Leonardo Music Journal", published
by M.I.T. Press."

"Imitation

"Sunset"
(Andy Warhol, USA, 1967) 33'
"Warhol's
recording of a beautiful California sunset was one of an unfinished
series commissioned by art patrons Jean and Dominique de Menil, and
visually echoes their Rothko Chapel. Nico reads poetry on the soundtrack.
"Imitation of Christ" is a domestic comedy about a strange
but beautiful young man who wanders through life oblivious to the
complaints of his parents (Ondine and Brigid Polk) and the attempted
seductions of his maid (Nico), his girlfriend (Andrea "Whips"
Feldman) and the riotous antics of Taylor Mead. Edited down to feature-length
from the 6-hour version included in Warhol's 25-hour double screen
film **** (1967)."
