Hello unto you.

I should very much like to tell you about the following website, showcasing some groups and individuals considered or approached to take part in Turnament, a "turntablist" music festival tentatively scheduled at the University of California Los Angeles in late autumn / winter 2002.
http://www.turnament.com/

It was designed by the estimable Jeff Yount. Many thanks to him because of it.
More are likely to be added soon, of course - further bulletins as events warrant...oh, and do let me know if I've forgotten anyone!

Now, more sad news, and very likely old to you at this point - but, a more positive update on the condition of Gary Todd (Cortical Foundation) follows...

"Juan Garcia Esquivel, composer, died at his home in Jiutepac, Morelos, Mexico on January 3. He was 83. The musician had been bedridden with a back injury for nearly 10 years. Three months ago, he suffered a stroke that left him unable to speak and caused paralysis in one-half of his body. He had a second stroke on December 30 that led to his death. Esquivel was born on January 20, 1918 in Tampico, Tamaulipas, Mexico.

In his youth, he was a popular pianist and bandleader in his homeland, and was a regular attraction on Mexican radio and television. He studied briefly at the Juilliard School in New York and scored and starred in two Mexican movies, "Cabaret Tragico" and "Las Locuras del Rock 'n' Roll," and at age 29 was lured back to the U.S. by RCA Victor Records, which signed him to a recording career. At the time, record labels were only beginning to release stereo albums, and Esquivel fully explored the medium, integrating panning and sonic separation into his winsome melodies.

Between 1957 and 1967 Esquivel wrote and released 11 studio albums of instrumentation that was exotic for the time (theremin, early Fender-Rhodes keyboards, Chinese bells and bass accordion). His most played composition, however, is "Universal Emblem," a three-second-long flurry of sound that has for decades accompanied the Universal Studios logo at the end of hundreds of television shows.

In the 1980s Esquivel returned to Mexico, where he worked on music for a children's TV show. In 1994, Bar / None Records issued the Esquivel compilation "Space Age Bachelor Pad Music". Other collections followed, including "Music From a Sparkling Planet" (1995) and "erry Xmas From the Space-Age Bachelor Pad" (1996).

Although Esquivel enjoyed a career revival in the 1990s, a broken hip and aggravated spinal injury left him bedridden and unable to walk. In May 2001, at the age of 82, he married his 25-year-old home health care worker, Carina Osario, his sixth wife. After his death, he was cremated and his ashes were sent home to his wife. He is survived by his son Mario Eddi Garcia Servin."

Michael Intriere <mintriere@rpa.com

"Here's the latest on Gary:

Over the past month, Gary has been in and out of the Intensive Care Unit twice, battling pneumonia. He still has a trach in his throat to keep his airway clear. However, he is now back in the Subacute ward, and I am pleased to announce that just in the last week (January 7 - 11) Gary has made great progress. He is much more aware and responsive than ever before. He can follow simple commands and has been using his right hand to grasp objects and even scratch his nose! When he looks you directly in the eye and frantically squeezes your hand you know he is trying to communicate, although he still doesn't have enough control (or maybe patience) to signal a simple "yes" or "no" to questions.

Yesterday I handed him the headphones to his CD player and he tried to put them on (since movement on his left side is still very limited he was only using one hand so all he could do was bring them up next to his ear, but it was still very impressive). Now would be a great time for friends to visit and / or send him cards, letters, drawings, photos, cds, etc. He has a bulletin board next to his bed that could use some new artwork and correspondence and of course his CD player is always hungry for music."
