Hello
unto you.
Another
year passes into eternity...By
the end of January, the Actions communiqué will transferred to Hertz-Lion.
http://www.hertz-lion.com
After
five+ years, it's about time to cut the volume of information I send
out every week. So, you can decide whether to continue to receive
the full communiqué by email, or simply click on a link that will
take you to the information at hand. That's not to say I won't keep
in touch! However, with the new arrangement, you can see actions occurring
more than two weeks ahead of time, and check archived actions for
the last five years. Optimally - ultimately - the Actions archive
will cover the whole of the last 100+ years of live actions, which,
of course, leads into the entire issue of a history of experimental
music (4,476 discographies later!). I feel very strongly that it's
important that the information be preserved and put into some sort
of larger context, for now, and future days.
Other
things I'm working on - because I realise that I may appear to be
this great silent granite monolith of constant information, but really
it isn't so! - are a turntablist festival in autumn / winter 2002
at UCLA (hush-hush lineup for now); a small Hertz-Lion of sorts about
the topic exists here:
http://www.turnament.com
and it
was created by the brilliant designing (and scheming) mind of Jeff
Yount. I'm beginning research on a book about ritualistic / occult
experimental music in the 1980s, so voyages around the globe, looking
for clues, are imminent in the new year.
Also,
I should take this opportunity to announce the near-completion of
"Sound/Art: A Survey", a book of 100 inter views with 100
different groups and composers of the avant-garde. It's due out on
Thumbprint Press (Los Angeles) in late spring and you should be quite
surprised at the roster of people I've assembled for this survey,
which is hopefully one in a series of several surveys on the subject
of sound/art...
"Confessions
of a Troublmaker" (the novel) is going through a final(?) rewrite,
and slowly but surely, my children's book, "50 Case Stories From
The Secret Files of Monsieur Hat!" is chugging away, running
up that hill - but let's not beat around Kate Bush! Next year's issue
of Bananafish brings my inter view with Jazzkammer, my LACMA installation
continues to expand, and oh, and there's an impending \\\ French tour
but the details of that are unclear.
I wish
you the best of a possibly peaceful and really reflective holiday
season, and thanks for keeping in touch through these times - I do
appreciate it, and it means the world to me.

STEIM
- image processing workshop actions
"Over
the two days of the 19th and 20th December, STEIM hosts a live image
processing workshop, exploring methods and techniques of capturing
and synthesising video and images in realtime focusing on the nato.0+55
software, a revolutionary collection of modular objects for the MAX
programming environment. The workshop brings together a group of the
most experienced operators and programmers of this environment, to
spend two days researching and investigating sensor and network interfaces.
In addition to the previous workshop hosted by STEIM in May 2001,
workshops have also been hosted by V2 (DEAF 2000), BEK, IAMAS, Salon/Japan,
IRCAM, ZKM, Hangar and Betaville.
To turn
the practice of live image processing away from an end in itself,
the event shall focus the use of projection and interactive relationships
away from the 'square box on a screen' paradigm. The event will explore
projection upon specific structures and spaces other than blank wall
space, encouraging the research of meaningful and interactive relationships
between the image, the space and the viewer."

"Unsilent
Night".
"Performed
every Christmas since 1992 in the streets of Downtown Manhattan, "Unsilent
Night" will be heard this season in the corridors of Vancouver's
West End. This work of ambient electronic music follows in the tape
loop work of Steve Reich and Brian Eno, and is performed as a moving
outdoor soundscape by a parade of people carrying boomboxes. The performance
will begin when over 20 volunteers with boomboxes press "play".
We will then move through the residential streets of the West End,
following Bidwell Street and Comox Street, passing through Nelson
Park, to finally arrive at Robson Square (in front of the Art Gallery)
around 6:45 pm. We would like to invite the city out to hear this
beautiful work of contemporary holiday music and modern electronic
sounds interwoven with hymns and antiphons from the past. The performance
is open to an infinite number of boomboxes, so we encourage more people
to join. If you have a boombox and you would like to be a part of
"Unsilent Night", please contact us."

LA MONTE
YOUNG & MARIAN ZAZEELA - installation "Sound and Light Environment".
"Young
and Zazeela characterize the Sound and Light Environment as "a
time installation measured by a setting of continuous frequencies
in sound and light." In the light environment Marian Zazeela
presents four works, two environmental: Imagic Light and Magenta Day,
Magenta Night, in installations specifically designed for the site;
and two sculptural: a neon work, Dream House Variation I, and a wall
sculpture, Ruine Window 1992 from her series, Still Light. In the
environment Imagic Light, Zazeela projects pairs of colored lights
on mobile forms to create seemingly three-dimensional colored shadows
in a luminous field.
In the
concurrent sound environment, La Monte Young presents The Base 9:7:4
Symmetry in Prime Time When Centered above and below The Lowest Term
Primes in The Range 288 to 224 with The Addition of 279 and 261 in
Which The Half of The Symmetric Division Mapped above and Including
288 Consists of The Powers of 2 Multiplied by The Primes within The
Ranges of 144 to 128, 72 to 64 and 36 to 32 Which Are Symmetrical
to Those Primes in Lowest Terms in The Half of The Symmetric Division
Mapped below and Including 224 within The Ranges 126 to 112, 63 to
56 and 31.5 to 28 with The Addition of 119, a periodic composite sound
waveform environment created from sine wave components generated digitally
in real time on a custom-designed Rayna interval synthesizer."

"Interferenze
is the first large group show of contemporary artists from the Nordic
countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden) organized
in Italy. The exhibition is conceived on the notion of interference
and is proposed as an occasion for revision of the cultural stereotypes
of Scandinavia. The legendary communion with nature has ceased to
be a primary, or even the only, source of inspiration for many Nordic
artists. In recent years, social and psychological pressures have
emerged and are reflected in art works which interfere with the current
condition of the welfare State, redefining the psychology of the individual
and his / her relationship with the urban context as well as the natural
landscape."

"Magnetic

"Magnetic
Landscape is an installation which alters the sonic environment of
a given space utilizing information already within the space as well
as its surroundings. In this instance, low frequency sound obtained
from seismograph microphone elements mounted to the outer wall of
the building and electromagnetic interference picked up by the system
are electronically processed and then played back through a P.A. and
several subwoofers mounted in the walls of the space."
