Hello unto you.

After the announcement of the death of John Watermann, I received details as to the nature of his passing. They are as follows - along with the news of the passing of composer Davide Mosconi, as related to me by Andrea Cernotto...

"97 hours after (John Watermann) stopped breathing he was cremated...at 5PM today, April 5, Brisbane time. His remains (he would have liked this) will come to us next Tuesday in a white
polystyrene container with a black plastic seal. To spread his ashes we have to puncture his container once more. His wish is to be taken back to Moreton Bay...(from where he came). We are in no rush to do this, he has a few old friends (who do not have email), he has a number of on-line friends, a handful of music collaborators, he had a few suppliers in an address book who I personally called today and he had a listening public. We intend to set a time and date (soon) and let you plan to be there on the water with us. Please understand he wanted no fuss to be made. Okay, so I have now been through his 2 found zips different back-ups; I've made a "friends" list. Tim Gruchy and I have cracked down all his sound and Mac gear and we have reinstated it at Co-Opones in Brisbane. He advised us earlier of (some) of the procedures he wanted us to follow. It was all so swift - even he was taken unawares.

He certainly hadn't had time to pass on the password he used to encrypt (some) files...as all those who know him, he was a list freak and left us some notes specifically. As Barbara was next of kin, she was called by the hospital and was with him at the end. I must also add (that) when we opened his flat Wednesday a.m., it was evident he intended to return home. His message on our answer machine was pained and it just dealt with the immediate task of getting him to the Royal Brisbane.

With a seriously compromised immune system, he was beaten by an infection after coming through a 16 hour (successful) blood transfusion. His kidneys and liver failed. The medical cause of death reads: Neutropenic Sebis. Staph in blood. Antecedent Causes: Chemotherapy to treat multiple myeloma." - Barbara Heath

"Sorry, but here are more bad news...last night, April 4, Davide Mosconi died after being hit by a taxi while crossing the street. Quite coincidentally, it happened in front of my hotel exactly at the time I was leaving.

Musician, visual artist and photographer, Davide Mosconi's work includes compositions for fog horns, rose petals, traditional and electronic instruments, music of paradise, sound installations, group composition and improvisation with NADMA, still lives and free advertising (for his studio) on the major Italian newspaper. Of course there was much more than this. What a sad story." - Andrea Cernotto

"Far From Vietnam" (16mm, Colour, 1967, 115 min) - screening

"Far From Vietnam is a collaborative undertaking: Alain Resnais, Jean-Luc Godard, Claude Lelouch, Agnes Varda, the Dutch director Joris Ivens and the American William Klein. The real hero of the undertaking, however is clearly Chris Marker, who has, in coordinating their materials, made an altogether more cohesive film out of them than could ever have been hoped.
Resnais had said of their intentions, "We were concerned to reproduce on the screen the different rhythms to which the Vietnam war is imposed daily upon the citizen. Press, radio, television, comic strips and so on all reflect the reality of the conflict with different intensity, different intentions, in different contexts, so that the connections are not always clear. Among other things in "Loin du Vietnam", we have tried to bring before the audience the often dramatic variety of these visual aggressions."

"Described as the next phase of Ultra-red's performance series "Trabajo y Días", the group will present a radio broadcast. Specially recorded for this HR2 broadcast, the Frankfurt edition of "Trabajo y Días" features the participation of Frankfurt-based activists.
"Trabajo y Días" began initially as a series of encounters between Ultra-Red and the musicians / organizers with Los Jornaleros del Norte. Los Jornaleros is comprised entirely of immigrant workers whose songs represent the struggles for work and dignity in Los Angeles. As an Ultra-Red performance, "Trabajo y Días" combines field recordings, sound processing, and spoken word - cutting across protocols of lap-top electronica, press conference polemics and panel discussion dialectics."

APRIL 26 - 27 - POSTPONED POSTPONED POSTPONED (due to strife in Palestine)

BACHIR ATTAR & THE MASTER MUSICIANS OF JAJOUKA

"Bachir Attar and the Master Musicians of Jajouka invite you to be a guest at the beginning of a new Jajoukan tradition - The Baraka Festival of Jajouka. This new music festival in Jajouka will be open to people from around the world who wish to experience the Master Musicians of
Jajouka perform their magical healing music in its natural setting. At this festival the "perfume makers" (as the surname "Attar" translates) will share the breath of Allah, bestowed to them through Sidi Ahmed Sheikh.
The Baraka Festival will honor and celebrate the "baraka" or "blessing" of Sidi Ahmed Sheikh, the Islamic Saint who brought Islam to the region surrounding Jajouka. Sidi Ahmed Sheikh bestowed upon the Master Musicians the ability to heal sickness and mental illnesses with their music, and, in turn was given the gift of the Masters' music. He is now buried in Jajouka and his sacred tomb is cared for by the holy man or "mqaddem" of the Attar family.

The festival will be a time of feasting, dancing, healing and unity. The Master Musicians will perform their ancient music under the moonlit Moroccan sky as they have for centuries. Bou Jeloud, the Father of Skins, will dance you into a frenzied trance, and you will have the
unique opportunity to see the Women Musicians of Jajouka in a rare public performance.

Please keep in mind that this is not a Western style music festival. The Master Musicians will be welcoming you into their small village, a place unadulterated by mass culture. This is where the musicians live and work. This is where their children play and wander through the village along with the goats and sheep. Jajouka is a beautiful and special place, a place where music heals, and a place which must be treated with the utmost respect. You will be expected to make a donation to the Musicians of at least $100 per day you are in Jajouka. This will pay for your food and help them provide you with their best hospitality. There will be no recording devices allowed at the festival as such things tend to interfere with your own and others spiritual experiences of the music. Feel free to bring a camera on your trip, but once you enter Jajouka leave it and any other recording devices behind. This will not be an experience you will need photos or tapes of to remember!
There is room in the village for you to stay if you wish to camp. Jajouka does not have electricity or running water and there are no guest rooms. This means you will need to bring a tent, sleeping bag and all the essentials. If you prefer something a bit more comfortable with the usual amenities, we recommend staying in Ksar El Kebir at the Hotel Al Yamama. From there you can easily take a short cab ride (@ 20 minutes) into the mountains to Jajouka.
If you have questions about travel, customs, or any other information please visit the new Jajouka message boards at http://www.jajouka.com
This will be a place where you can share your stories of Jajouka, discuss their music, Morocco, and interact with other friends of the Master Musicians."

APRIL 27
RON KUIVILA - installation
"An Outgoing Message".

"'Outgoing Message' uses forty telephones and eight channels of sound synthesized to the exacting standards of the world's best telephone systems to explore the transition zone between sounds and commands.
Watching the clock, waking to an alarm, waiting for the phone to ring, waiting for your call to beanswered, refusing to answer the phone. All of these moments of suspension and discontinuity have a kind of Pavlovian force. Our response to these stimuli is not cerebral - it is spinal.
The dial tones, ring, and busy singals of the world's telephone systems comprise an odd collection of simple musical gestures, immediately and inescapably recognizable to some and confusing to others. For example, the charming 10/8 pattern of the Italian dial tone can be disconcerting to someone used to the droning dial tones of the rest of the world. The frequencies of the North American phone tones (350, 440, 480, 620 Hz) spell out a pleasingly exotic scale with a quarter tone sharp fourth and a very flat seventh. The transition from a peaceful Javanese pelog to an irritating busy signal occurs the instant two tones are pulsed together at a steady 120 times a second. One final oddity - in the movies, a dialtone appears whenever one person hangs up on another. In life, dialtones are harder to come by."

LA MONTE YOUNG & MARIAN ZAZEELA - installation
"Sound and Light Environment".

"Young and Zazeela characterize the Sound and Light Environment as "a time installation measured by a setting of continuous frequencies in sound and light." In the light environment Marian Zazeela presents four works, two environmental: Imagic Light and Magenta Day, Magenta Night, in installations specifically designed for the site; and two sculptural: a neon work, Dream House Variation I, and a wall sculpture, Ruine Window 1992 from her series, Still Light. In the environment Imagic Light, Zazeela projects pairs of colored lights on mobile forms to create
seemingly three-dimensional colored shadows in a luminous field.

In the concurrent sound environment, La Monte Young presents The Base 9:7:4 Symmetry in Prime Time When Centered above and below The Lowest Term Primes in The Range 288 to 224 with The Addition of 279 and 261 in Which The Half of The Symmetric Division Mapped above and Including 288 Consists of The Powers of 2 Multiplied by The Primes within The Ranges of 144 to 128, 72 to 64 and 36 to 32 Which Are Symmetrical to Those Primes in Lowest Terms in The Half of The Symmetric Division Mapped below and Including 224 within The Ranges 126 to 112, 63 to 56 and 31.5 to 28 with The Addition of 119, a periodic composite sound waveform environment created from sine wave components generated digitally in real time on a custom-designed Rayna interval synthesizer."

APRIL 8 - MAY 4
STEVEN STAPLETON & DAVID TIBET - exhibition

"Forging a mutual artistic bond in 1983 lasting to the present day, Tibet and Stapleton create coherent yet separate visions, in turns destructive and beautiful, both demonic and childlike.
Utilising collage, ink, watercolour, enamel paint, crayon and household paint, Stapleton blends influences from Roland Topor and Max Ernst, whilst Tibet's pastel drawings move from Enid Blyton to Louis Wain.
This inaugural exhibition displays new and old 2D and 3D works comprising of a selection from a vast 20 year body of work both on paper and in sound, including original album cover art, with two new site-specific sound installations by the artists.

World renowned as recording artists Current 93 and Nurse With Wound, Tibet and Stapleton initially grew as seminal lights of the UK post-punk experimental and underground scene to latter production of their huge swathes of musically apocalyptic folkscapes and surreal visions of unsellable pop music.
Issuing both their own and others' contemporary work, as well as part forgotten gems of artistic endeavour from folk musicians to decadent authors upon their Durtro, United Dairies and United Durtro record labels, as well as the Durtro and Ghost Story press imprints, Tibet and Stapleton fiercely champion independence, operating as both cult and cottage industry to their selves; proffering an umbrella and expression for the aesthetically unique."
