Hello
unto you.
First, a follow-up on a story we brought you here on the broadcast
a few months ago.
Date: Sat, 20 Jul 2002 13:40:30 +0200
From:
info@johnduncan.org
"Greetings,
Just a brief message
to let you know that the lawsuit against IASPIS has been resolved
in an out-of-court settlement: a monetary award that serves as a concrete
apology for their actions against my work, and against me personally,
that began last January.
Your email protest
against IASPIS earlier this year was essential support, more than
I can ever hope to describe. It's probably safe to say that the strength
of your response was unexpected by everyone involved, encouraging
me to insist that my art be respected enough to defend it against
one of the most powerful cultural institutions of the Swedish government,
by bringing legal claims to the Swedish court.
The current board
of Konstnärsnämnden (IASPIS) now has a precedent to follow to show
respect to the artists they invite, and personal experience of what
can happen when they don't, which I hope will benefit everyone involved
with the program in the future. Now that the legal case is
settled, I can
let you know I have no hard feelings toward any of the board members.
Jan Palmblad, staff
lawyer for the Swedish branch of Greenpeace, and Harry Steinmann,
lawyer for Konstnärsnämnden (IASPIS), deserve full credit for negotiating
terms acceptable to all parties.
The award will
be used to fund current and future projects.
Best wishes,
John Duncan"
Now, a rather
encouraging tidbit about what might be in store for the composers
among us.
(5945) Roachapproach
Minor planet
number 5945 has been named in honor of Steve Roach. The citation announcing
the naming appeared on Minor Planet Circular 31296 (issued 1998 Feb.
11), from which the following is extracted with permission:
(5945) Roachapproach
= 1984 SQ3
"Discovered
1984 Sept. 28 by B. A. Skiff at the Anderson Mesa Station of Lowell
Observatory. Named
in honor of Steve Roach, musician and composer of "space music".
Among the most progressive performers in the genre, his prolific output
includes seminal works such as "Structures from Silence"
(1984), "Dreamtime Return" (1988) and "The Magnificent
Void" (1996). His mixture of heavily-processed electronic sounds
with primitive woodwinds and percussion
conveys powerful impressions of spatial immensity. These have inspired
the discoverer
through endless nights at the telescope. Name suggested by L. Kohanov."

"For
the next year, I will be running this daily radio programme for Resonance
FM. It will be broadcast between 23.30-00.00 Greenwich Mean time,
and also via http://www.resonancefm.com
It will
consist of an unedited real-time recording of that same half hour
as heard through somebody's ears somewhere in the world: a daily hole
in space and time. All time zones will be covered and as many geographical
locations as possible. The ears will belong to a lot of people doing
a lot of different things. Be somewhere someone else for 30 minutes
every day. Most windows will be commissioned, but there is room for
more, so anyone wishing to participate, please contact me at cc@megacorp.u-net.com
"

a twirling paper twisting through the street; a scene that is also
familiar from films."

"Outside
In" - exhibition
"'Outside
In' is an exhibition representing the work of outsider artists, those
who work outside the conventional parameters of the art world. The
show will contain various strands, the first being a selection of
works from the Musgrave Kinley Outsider Collection. Among these works
are featured some of the key names in outsider art over the last one
hundred years, including work by Adolf Wolfi, Henry Darger and Oswald
Tschirtner. These works represent an instinctive approach to expression,
often coming from an untrained artistic background. Representing a
new way of looking and thinking about art which is open and inclusive.
Also included in the exhibition will be work from the National Schizophrenia
Fellowship (N.S.F) art workshops and the Windsor House Art Workshops.
Illustrating the artwork of people living with mental illness, using
art as a form of therapy and expression. This work pushes beyond perceived
social or cultural boundaries, to form a vast range of abstract and
figurative imagery, with a strong visual spontaneity which is seldom
seen outside its art therapy context.
Finally
the work of Moscow Joe McKinnley will be on display. Joe is a retired
milkman and has filled his home and surrounding area with an array
of collaged images, found objects and painted signs. Over a number
of years this has evolved into an organic mass of information and
imagery, based on his own unique outlook and memories. Joe also displays
a number of signs on roads and telegraph poles around his home town
with one of his main concerns in mind of just wanting to make people
smile."
